Holistic Approach to Recreational Ballet
Focusing largely on Classical ballet technique and building on the foundations laid by the previous levels to increase the repertoire of steps, the class is a recreational ballet class for those children wanting to experience a ballet class once a week.
There is an element of creative movement within the program, to allow for freedom of expression and children’s own ability to think creatively. Along with set dances, the children will also have opportunities to develop their own choreographic skills within the class!
Your child's age is just the first step in choosing the right program for them!
The age ranges you see mentioned are not set in stone, they're just a guide, a starting place to give us some idea on where to start. Every child is different, and at a different stage in their development which not always aligns with the 'average' we become accustomed to.
So please incorporate some of the considerations below into your selection process, and if you are still unsure, please do not hesitate to Contact Us, we've been doing this for a very long time and know what works and what does not!
General advice: Be conservative!
If you are unsure, drop back to the younger alternative. All classes start with a trial so you have nothing to lose.
Once you attend the trial you will have a much better idea of whether the class was too east or too challenging or just right.
If we find the class was too easy, then its a much more encouraging proposition to try the older class the following week, rather than the younger. The former gives your child a sense of accomplishment and progress, the latter may imply a sense of failure, however small, it may be felt.
For example "next week you can dance with the big girls", as opposed to "next week you'll be with the little ones".
Less than 14 months: You might be able to start a little before 14 months if you child can stand quite confidently.
Around 2 to 2½ years: Children at this age could probably do either our 'Cherubs' or 'Mummy & Me' classes. Ideally, if you have the choice, start with Cherubs (although we don't run as many Cherubs as Mummy & Me classes, so this option is not always availble).
Around 3½ years: At this age the main concern is how they would go without you with them in class to assist them, if they are more confident and do cope well without you, then you might consider the older age group (3½-5 years), if not, then we would suggest the younger group (2-3½ years). Remember, be conservative!
Around 5 years: Here we take it more off whether they have started school or now.
If they are not yet at primary school then select the younger age group (3½-5 years), otherwise the older (5-7 years), unless they are not developmentally as far along, then maybe start with the Tots class.
Around 7 years: If they are in the first two years of primary school then select the younger age group (5-7 years), otherwise the older (7-12 years).
